General description
The OCTOPUS system is a modular vacuum gripping solution designed for palletising robots and general vacuum handling applications. It permits gripping objects of virtually any shape and material (provided they do not have excessive transpiration) without replacing vacuum cups, and it is effective even when the object surface covers only a small percentage of the suction plate. The lifting capacity is proportional to the effective gripping surface.

Standard composition
- An anodised aluminium box open on one side with a built-in micro-fine stainless steel mesh filter protecting the vacuum generator (easy to inspect).
- A suction plate sealing the box, made of anodised aluminium with calibrated, equidistant holes and coated with special perforated foam rubber that adapts to smooth, rough or irregular surfaces.
- One or two compressed air-fed vacuum generators (depending on model). Some smaller OCTOPUS variants include the multi-stage vacuum generator with built-in silencer as part of the item; larger systems may require vacuum generators ordered separately. These systems can be supplied in custom dimensions and with alternative vacuum tables and vacuum generators on request.

Features and advantages
- Adapts to a wide range of surfaces (cardboard boxes, wooden pallets, jars, cans, ceramic tiles, metal profiles, bags, blister packs, etc.).
- Calibrated holes permit exact calculation of vacuum generator flow rate to maintain sufficient vacuum even in presence of transpiration or partial coverage.
- Optional shut-off valves per hole or per vacuum cup to automatically close suction in case of missing/defective grip, improving energy efficiency and maintaining vacuum on remaining holes.
- Available interchangeable suction plate types to match application: foam-covered plates, special sponge rubber plates, vacuum-cup plates, bag-gripping seals and plates with shut-off valves.

Plate types and intended uses

• PX / P2X: Standard suction plates with calibrated holes coated with perforated foam rubber. Foam thickness: 15 mm (PX) or 30 mm (P2X). Lifting force calculated at a vacuum of at least -75 kPa with safety factor 3.
• PH / P2H: Special plates with sponge rubber (15 mm PH / 30 mm P2H) for gripping empty cans, tins, jars and vials without lids/caps. Not suitable for empty plastic or glass water/wine bottles. Flexible containers must be vacuum-tested to avoid implosion risk.
• PXE / P2XE, PY2E / P2Y2E, PXE...: Versions of plates with shut-off valves inserted in each hole to prevent vacuum loss when some holes are not sealed, reducing required generator flow.
• PY / P2Y: Special plates (greater force or for very rough/uneven surfaces), interchangeable with standard plates.
• PV / P2V: Suction plates equipped with vacuum cups (recommended bellows cups) for very uneven or highly flexible surfaces (bags, blister packs, etc.). Cup supports: 1/8" gas on PV, 1/4" gas on P2V. Cups cold-assembled onto supports; can be supplied in different compounds and diameters up to specified limits.
• PVE / P2V E: Vacuum-cup plates with shut-off valves at each cup support connection for improved efficiency and use in any orientation.
• PJ: Bag-gripping plates with special foam rubber seal for paper/plastic bags containing powders, granules, liquids; seal shape reduces bag deformation and vacuum loss.

OCTOPUS gripping bars and mounting
OCTOPUS vacuum gripping bars facilitate installation on palletising robots: they include a slotted fixing plate for quick mounting, one or more compressed-air vacuum generators, quick-coupling for compressed air, an anodised aluminium box with inlet connections for fast atmospheric restoration and possibility to install vacuum switches. Aluminium parts can be replaced with lighter thermoplastic (Polizene) upon request to reduce weight by ~40%.

Accessories and spare parts

• Digital vacuum switches (1/8" gas axial), vacuum gauges, pressure gauges, silencers, stainless steel disc filters.
• Sealing kits, reed valves, supports for vacuum cups with calibrated hole, shut-off valves.
• Flange fixing supports and locking plates with distributor for connection to remotely installed vacuum generators or alternative vacuum sources (available versions suited to indicated generators).
